Dr. Flerchinger’s research has focused on measurement and modeling of surface fluxes to quantify the role of vegetation ecosystems in modulating surface fluxes, microclimate and hydrology. Model development and application has focused on process models for hydrologic systems and soil and water resources, with a particular interest in soil freezing, snowmelt, evapotranspiration, plant canopy processes, and post-fire hydrologic recovery, where the Simultaneous Heat and Water (SHAW) model has been used extensively. More recently, carbon dynamics, including photosynthesis, carbon uptake, and soil respiration has been incorporated into the model.
